Goodbye TV Time: so long, and thanks for all the fish

Tomorrow, July 15, TV Time goes dark for good. Ten years of couch check-ins, popcorn icons, and “just one more episode” lies we told ourselves, all switching off at once. If you’re feeling something about that, you’re among your people here.

Don’t panic. Towel optional, zip file mandatory. Here’s the eulogy, and the plan.

A eulogy for the checkmark

Before it was an app category, it was TV Time teaching millions of us that finishing an episode deserved a tap. It knew about your Lost rewatch. It knew you rated that one Game of Thrones episode a 2 and meant it. It held a decade of tiny “I was here” flags planted across everything you ever watched.

Apps die the way shows do. Some get a proper series finale; some get cancelled mid-season on a cliffhanger. TV Time at least gave us a final-season announcement and a way to collect our things on the way out. As cancellations go, that’s more dignity than Firefly got.

So pour one out for the little checkmark app. It mattered. Your history mattering is the reason it hurts.

And now its watch has ended

The facts, plainly: on July 15 the servers shut down, the app stops working, and whatever wasn’t exported stops existing. Your GDPR export zip is the black box flight recorder, and it holds more than you might think:

• Every tracked episode, with timestamps, rewatches included
• Your episode, season, and show ratings
• Your watchlist, and your movie rows if you tracked those

One thing it doesn’t hold: comments. TV Time’s community layer had no export path, so those conversations go down with the ship. We wrote a guide to reading the export zip if you want to know exactly what you’re holding.

We’re here to hodor

Hold the door. That’s the job. While the wave of TV Time refugees comes through, the importer is standing in the doorway making sure nothing gets left behind: upload the zip and we rebuild your episodes, your rewatch cycles, and your ratings, all with the original watch dates.
