Ali G is back: the secret sequel 'Who Iz I?' lands in October

Respec. Ali G is back, and somehow nobody saw it coming, which, for a character who built a career on catching people off guard, is exactly right.

Sacha Baron Cohen shot an entire new Ali G movie in secret. No leaks, no set photos, no year of buildup. In early July the whole thing just materialized: Ali G: Who Iz I?, a sequel to 2002’s Ali G Indahouse, landing in theaters on October 23 through Amazon MGM. More than two decades since he last put on the tracksuit, and he pulled the reveal off like one of his own stunts.

Made in the dark

Here’s the part that makes this more than a nostalgia play. Cohen didn’t just star in and write this one. He directed it, his first feature as a director, and he did the whole thing quietly enough that the news broke as a genuine surprise rather than a marketing rollout.

That is a real swing. The man-on-the-street prank format that made Ali G famous relies entirely on people not knowing what they’re walking into, and keeping the film itself under wraps is the same trick scaled up. Whether that means the old ambush comedy or something new, we do not know yet, and honestly, not knowing is the most Ali G thing about it.

The big question

Comedy does not sit still for twenty years, and neither does the world it pokes at. The Ali G that shocked people in 2002 arrives in 2026 to a very different room. Does the joke still land? Has Cohen found a new angle, or is he betting the character was always sharper than people gave him credit for?

We genuinely do not know, and that is the fun of it. This could be a victory lap or a total reinvention. Either way, a comedy legend returning to his most famous creation, on his own terms, in secret, is the kind of swing worth showing up for. Booyakasha or bust.
